ISHAS CONTRIBUTIONS TO PUBLIC HEALTH IN INDIA Public Health status of a society influences morbidity, mortality, health care expenditure and socio-economic development of a society. This influences the quality of life and longevity. Realizing the importance of health education and training of public health professionals, ISHAs contributions have been as follows: 1. CONFERENCES: ISHA has organized national conferences in which 200-300 professionals and administrators have participated. Those related to public health are: 1980 Health for All by 2000 AD II. CAPACITY BUILDING IN PUBLIC HEALTH In the last 27 years, ISHA has conducted about 300 training programmes for Central Government, State Governments, educational and research institutions, WHO, NGOs, and professional bodies in the field of public health. About 15,000 medical administrative, nursing personnel and NGO representatives have been trained in public health. Some of the programmes have been: a. National Health Policy and National Health Programmes Thirty- two training programmes for CGHS Medical Officers in Health Policy, National Health Programmes Implementation: Family Welfare, Malaria, TB, HIV-AIDS, Cardio-vascular, Cancer, Leprosy, and related areas. b. HIV-AIDS To create awareness, we have conducted about 30 workshops nationally and large number for state governments, specifically for North-Eastern States where the risk of HIV-AIDS is high Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura. Also, extensive training programmes for Karnataka, Kerala, Orissa, West Bengal and other states. c. Biomedical Waste and Municipal Waste Management. Based on extensive research studies of over 3000 hospitals, we have conducted large number of training programmes at national, state and institutional levels. d. Disasters Preparedness and Emergencies Management We have conducted over 100 training programmes at national, state and institutional level for disasters preparedness and public health effects of disasters. e. One-year Competency Based Post graduate Distance Learning Programme. Since 2005, we are offering one-year competency based distance learning programme in public health. A number of health professionals are enrolled.
III. Research studies: ISHA has carried out the following studies in public health fields: 1982- Distribution of Family Welfare Measures in IPP Districts Andhra Pradesh 1982- Reorganization of the Health System in Karnataka State towards Primary Health Care. 1989- Evaluation Study of the IPP-III project in Karnataka State. 1990- Study on Community Participation in Health and Family Welfare. Innovative Experiences country wide study. 1990- Health and development of the tribal people in India 1990- Nutritional status of women and children in two backward districts of Karnataka State 1992- Health and Development in India. Background document for Planning Commission for the Eighth Five Year Plan 1994- Evaluation of 52 PVOH-I projects for strengthening health services. 1994- Health of the youth in 200 Bangalore slums. 1994- Study on organizational, management, and community factors involved in resurgence of Malaria and Effective Implementation of National Malaria Eradication Programme. 1995- Midterm evaluation of model family welfare schemes of NGOs assisted by GOI (200 projects). 1995- Immunization coverage, evaluation in five districts in Karnataka for UNICEF. 1994-1995-  Assisted the Ministry of Health and Planning Commission in conducting a study on present stock of health manpower and projected requirements by 2020. 1997- Study on present supply and requirements of blood: voluntary blood donation and requirements for blood by 2005. 1997- Study and development of systems for hospital waste and hazards management for Bangalore and Hubli-Dharwad. 1997- Study on X-ray installations effect of radiation hazards in causation of childhood cancers. 2001- Projected patterns of cardiac heart diseases in professionals and administrators in India. 2002- Study on Impact of externally financially assisted projects on health and family welfare in Karnataka state. 2002- Study on clinical competency of general practitioners in diagnosis, treatment, and referral of HIV-AIDS, TB, and Malaria Cases: Critical Issues and Recommendations. 2003- Public-Private partnership in Public Health in India. 2004- Study on Smoking Behaviour, Cancer, and Fertility Effects in woman in urban and rural areas. 2005- Study on assessment and diagnosis of pediatric tuberculosis in India.
