ASSISTANCE TO THE KARNATAKA STATE GOVERNMENT IN
TRAINING, RESEARCH, EVALUATION, AND HEATLH SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT

   The Indian Society of Health Administrators has assisted the Karnataka State Government, in the last 26 years, as follows:

1)     Has organized approximately fifteen training programmes on Hospital/Health Management for senior officers of the Directorate covering DHOS, ADHOS, medical officers of primary health centers, gazetted assistants, lay secretaries of medical colleges, hospitals, Principals and Heads of Departments of Medical Colleges.

2)     Have conducted a large number of training programmes for senior executives of public sector enterprises for Karnataka Bureau of Public Enterprises.

3)     Reorganization Study of Karnataka State Co-operative Land Development Bank, Bangalore - 1978.

4)     Reorganization Study of Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited – 1980.

5)     Worked with Population Centre in training of Medical Officers of the Primary Health Centres. 1980-86.

6)     Conducted a comprehensive study on Re-organization of the Health Systems in Karnataka State during 1982 towards Primary Health Care – a Statewide Study.

7)     Prepared a comprehensive study on Drug Distribution System in Karnataka State which is being implemented, 1977.

8)     Completed a comprehensive study on Functional Analysis of Primary Health Centres with regard to the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Family Welfare Programmes, 1980.

9)     Keeping in view the problems of urban health and fastest growth patterns of Bangalore City, organized in 1989 a State level Conference on Health of the Metropolis - Bangalore, in collaboration with various Departments of the State Government. Following this, a comprehensive document, to serve as a guide, was prepared for planning and promoting the health of the urban cities in Karnataka State.

10)     Evaluated the IPP III Project on behalf of the Government of India and the World Bank. 1989

11)     Has organized, in collaboration with the Health and Medical Education Departments, National Conferences as follows:

i)     1980 – Health for All by 2000 AD
ii)     1981 – Role of Hospitals in Health Care
iii)    1988 – Health of Women and Children for Development
iv)    1992 – Role of Voluntary Organizations in Health Care

12)     Keeping in view the health status of mothers and children in backward districts, during 1990, conducted a major study on Nutritional Status of Women and Children covering two districts of Raichur and Gulbarga for Department of Women and Child Welfare.
Recommendations of this Study are being implemented.

13)     In collaboration with the Government of Karnataka, organized the Regional Workshop for Ministry of Health, Government of India, in sensitizing the Nodal Officers for effective collaboration of the voluntary organizations in India. 1993.

14)     Keeping in view the health of youth in slums, ISHA completed a major study during 1994 on “Health of the Youth in Bangalore Slums”. The results of this study would enable the State Government and Municipal Corporation authorities in initiating appropriate actions for improved delivery of health care for the youth who would be the future citizens and leaders in the communities.

15)     Conducted Immunization Coverage Evaluation Survey in Five Districts of Karnataka State: Belgaum, Bellary, Bidar, Bijapur, and Raichur Districts for State Family Welfare Bureau, Karnataka State with the financial assistance of UNICEF. 1995.

16)     Conducted a study on the Effectiveness of Schemes of Widow Pensions and Maternity Allowance in Karnataka State for Department of Women and Child Development, 1996.

17)     Prepared a Status Paper on Female Child in Karnataka; Present Status, Issues, and Future Directions for Department of Women and Child Development, 1996.

18)     Comprehensive Education and Awareness Programme for HIV-AIDS covering 25,000 High School and College Students and 15,000 bus drivers/conductors, 1996.

19)     Study and Behavioural Change Programme for Health of Reproductive Mothers in slums of Bangalore, 1996.

20)     Study on Present Supply and Requirements of Blood. Voluntary Blood Donation and Requirements for Blood by 2000 and 2005, (1997).

21)     Study and Development of Systems for Hospital Waste and Hazards Management for the cities of Bangalore and Hubli-Dharwad, 1997.

22)     Study on Clinical Waste Management in government and private hospitals (25 government and 54 private hospitals) in Karnataka State. 1998-99.

23)     Study on Solid Waste Management and Effluent Treatment in government hospitals in Karnataka State. 1999-2000.

24)     Study on Blood Supply. Blood Banks, and Functioning of Blood Banks at District levels in Karnataka State. 1998.

25)     Study on Medical and Hospital Equipment availability functionality, and utilization in government hospitals in a major metro city – Bangalore, 2000.

26)     Study on Impact of Externally Assisted Projects in the Health and Family Welfare Field – 2005.

27)     Bringing an Issue of the Journal `Health Administrator' devoted to Health and Family Welfare Services: Towards Equity, Quality, and Integrity in Health Services – 2005.
