ISHA’s CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
OF NURSING PERSONNEL IN INDIA

1.    In the last 58 years, since Independence, there has been a phenomenal growth in the health field in India: production of medical, nursing and allied manpower; establishment of health institutions – government, corporate, private, and voluntary sector; pharmaceutical, medical, technology, and information technology. With most modern, high-tech health care supported by qualified, competent and available health manpower, India has emerged as a major health center for Middle East, African, European, and Western countries.

2.    Keeping in view the needs for health manpower and systems development, and realizing that quality of nursing manpower is essential for quality health care, Indian Society of Health Administrators (ISHA) Bangalore, has contributed extensively in the last 26 years towards capacity building of medical, nursing, and allied health manpower. The attached note gives information about our capacity building programmes.

3.    There is a shortage of nursing manpower particularly teaching faculty. Also, there is a high brain drain of nurses to European and Western countries since there is a shortage of manpower in those countries.

4.    For quality health care, it is essential that nurses are competent, committed, have compassion and are able to communicate effectively, particularly with critical patients. This is what we try to achieve in our training courses on clinical and administrative updates for nursing personnel.

The course outline covers the following areas:

A.    Medical and Health Services in India; Role and Requirements of Nursing Personnel; Problems of Nursing         Management: Role Clarity and Job Descriptions

D.    Management of Wards, Laundry, CSSD, Outpatients, Emergency, Materials Management, Use of Computers in         education, research, and management of nursing care.

E.    Infection Control and Universal Precautions; Infection Control in Key Areas; Operating Room Nursing Practice ;        Hospital Clinical Waste Management
